The densification of Al 2 O 3 –30TiC (in weight percent) composite is investigated as a function of Y 2 O 3 additions. It is observed that very small amounts of Y 2 O 3 are effective in aiding the densification. The density was observed to pass through a maximum at 0.35 wt% of Y 2 O 3 . The gas‐generating reaction of Al 2 O 3 with TiC is likely to be suppressed by the addition of Y 2 O 3 .
