Repeated point contact loading has been used to investigate the deformation and fracture of single‐crystal magnesium oxide subjected to cyclic loading by softer metallic cones at room temperature. The results of the investigation clearly indicate that MgO is susceptible to cyclic fatigue. An explanation for the mechanical cyclic fatigue effect is proposed.
