The hardness of single crystals of flux‐grown, untwinned monoclinic zirconia was determined using Knoop and Vickers microindenters. Significant hardness anisotropy existed on (100) and {110} faces, with a maximum Knoop hardness of ∼8 GPa, although large variance was observed between different batches of crystals. Extensive deformation twinning, primarily on {110}, but also on (001), accompanied microindentation at all temperatures between room temperature and 800°C.
