Calcium hydroxyapatite powders were prepared by hydrothermal reactions of calcium pyrophosphate and calcium oxide. Primary particles of the hydroxyapatite obtained were spherical with diameters less than 0.2 μm, and small prismatic crystals were rarely observed in some fields. The effects of temperature, pressure, and soaking time on the structural features of the resultant powders were also studied by means of XRD and SEM and were smaller than expected for the ranges investigated.
