Comparison of the microstructural changes and of the densification kinetics during the sintering of doped and undoped BaTiO 3 ceramics shows the existence of an increase in densification rate at the point of onset of abnormal grain growth. It is suggested that the increase is attributable to an enhancement of the driving force for densification brought about by the surface curvature changes when a matrix pore makes contact with a growing abnormal grain.
