A method is discussed for preparing applied‐moment double‐cantileverbeam specimens used in fracture toughness (K Ic ) testing. This procedure eliminates the need to precrack the specimens, which often leads to specimen failure before testing. In addition to yielding toughness values which are in agreement with literature values, this method allows the experimenter greater control in selecting the location of failure initiation.
