A Sc 2 O 3 ‐MgO‐Al 2 O 3 ‐SiO 2 melt reacted with bulk pieces of hot‐pressed Si 3 N 4 , dissolving Si 3 N 4 at the surface and penetrating into the interior via the grain boundaries. During subsequent cooling, the glass phase in the Si 3 N 4 easily crystallized and fine crystallites were formed, but no phase separation was observed. This behavior contrasts strongly with that observed for a similar melt reaction without Sc 2 O 3 .
