The chemical composition of mullite which was termed from 2SiO 2 3Al 2 O 3 xerogel by firing was examined by analytical TEM. Mullite formed at 950°C firing showed around 66 mol% Al 2 O 3 , which was fairly Al 2 O 3 rich compared with the bulk composition. The chemical composition of mullite gradually approached the bulk composition as the firing temperature increased to 1400°C and slightly departed again above that firing temperature.
