Free silicon in silicon nitride compacts can act as suitable liquid solvent for Si 3 N 4 and assists in the α to β phase transformation. The rate of transformation depends on the size of the added silicon particles. When submicrometer silicon particles are added, the rate of transformation is more rapid than when large particles are added; the complete transformation can be achieved at 1700°C in 1 h.
