β‐Ca 2 Si0 4 can be obtained from a mixture ofCaC 2 O 4 ‐H 2 O and amorphous silica by firing at 950°C as opposed to a normal sintering temperature around 1450°C. If CaCO 3 is used instead of CaC 2 O 4 ·H 2 O, four repeated firings under CO 2 atmosphere are needed to obtain β‐Ca 2 SiO 4 . The role of CO 2 atmosphere during firing and the influence of specific surface of reactanm on the rate of reaction are discussed.
