Relatively large compact glass samples (∼5 mm in diameter) of 65SiO 2 ·20TiO 2 ·15ZrO 2 and other binary and ternary compositions were prepared by the alkoxide gel method. Prolonged storage of the gels in water before they were dried reduced the residual carbon content of the resulting glasses considerably. Optimal preparation conditions are given, and the microstructure of the gels and glasses obtained is discussed.
