The stability of the tetragonal phase in tetragonal zirconia polycrystals consolidated at 830 MPa for 2 to 5 s at 1400°C was studied. Consolidation under such conditions stabilizes the tetragonal phase because of the resulting grain size. Subsequent heat treatment of the samples for relatively long periods, however, tends to promote the tetragonal→monoclinic transformation.
