The effect of adding BaCl 2 to BaSO 4 at elevated temperatures was studied. Differential thermal analysis and hot‐stage microscopy revealed that a eutectic occurs at 865°C between BaCl 2 and 13.5 mol% BaSO 4 . The microstructure in the reaction zone indicated that BaS04 recrystallizes from the eutectic melt. Thus, BaCl 2 additions can activate BaSO 4 at a temperature as low as 865°C.
