The interfacial reaction between Y 2 O 3 ‐partially‐stabilized ZrO 2 and α‐Al 2 O 3 was studied. It was noted that α‐Al 2 O 3 forms inside the periphery of the β‐Al 2 O 3 grains; its formation suggests the loss of Na 2 O from the p‐Al 2 O 3 , either by evaporation or by dissolution in the ZrO 2 matrix. The presence of Na 2 ZrO 3 is suspected.
