Ultrafine SiC powders synthesized by reacting colloidal silica with petroleum pitch were characterized by optical and electron microscopy. Spherical agglomerates and unattached particles of Sic were observed in all products irrespective of synthesis conditions. The source of the spherical agglomerates of Sic particles was traced to the precursor mixture.
