The rate of growth of a beta alumina reaction layer at an interface between alpha alumina and sodium aluminate was determined. The data for the growth of this reaction layer were found to obey a parabolic rate law. Further analysis of the data indicated that the reaction is controlled by oxygen diffusivity in beta alumina .
