A viscoelastic analysis is provided that describes the change with temperature and time of the radius of curvature of a split ring seal. The setting temperature of the split ring depends strongly on the ratio of the thicknesses of the constituent layers. It is possible to predict that dependence and to relate the setting temperature of the split ring to that of a sandwich seal of the same materials. Thus, the change in radius of curvature of a split ring can be used to predict the stresses in a sandwich seal.
