The viscoelastic analysis of bead seals is compared with experimental results. Good agreement is demonstrated for cooling, heating, and isothermal holds. Different setting temperatures, T sz and T so , are shown to pertain to the axial and radial stresses, respectively. Simple formulas are presented with which the change of setting temperature with stiffness ratio, n , can be predicted. The Hull‐Burger equations with T s =T s (n ) incorporated are shown to describe adequately the variation of stresses with the glass‐to‐metal diameter ratio in a bead seal.
