Single crystals of ä‐Na 2 Si 2 0 5 were prepared. Experiments without a seed crystal either failed or resulted in only fine‐grained crystals. Annealing a melt enriched with ∼1% Na 2 0 for 20 h at 815°C with a small seed crystal of α‐Na 2 Si 2 0 5 , yielded single crystals ≥30 mm long. Crystallization started spherolithically from this seed crystal which acted as a center of heterogeneous nucleation.
