The effect of “fortification” on the mechanical damage resistance and strength degradation of a crystallized, cordierite glass was studied. The effect of hardness indents on the room‐temperature strength of fortified and unfortified bars was compared. Fortified specimens underwent significant strength degradation only after an order of magnitude greater indent load was applied compared to unfortified specimens.
