An experimental technique employing localized laser heating has been developed to seed abnormal grain growth in Mg‐doped Al 2 O 3 permitting the migration behavior of individual grain boundaries to be investigated. Nonuniform growth of both naturally nucleated and laser‐nucleated abnormal grains was observed. Calculated boundary mobilities exceeded those characterizing grain growth in both doped and undoped porous Al 2 O 3 ).
