Silicon nitride powder synthesis was investigated via the silica reduction method. Adding Si 3 N 4 to the SiO 2 ‐C mixture increased the reaction rate and promoted the formation of homogeneous Si 3 N 4 grains. This effect could be explained on the basis that each Si 3 N 4 particle acts as a ‘seed’ for the reaction.
