This study shows that the amount ofAl 2 O 3 needed to form high density Si 3 N 4 ‐15Y 2 ‐O 3 samples can be reduced by using high surface area Si 3 N 4 powder and high N 2 overpressure (high sintering temperatures) during the sintering process. The reduction in AI 2 O 3 content results in improved oxidation resistance of the sintered samples.
