Free volume (V f ), defined by Simha and Boyer, was measured for glasses in the system MO‐P 2 O 5 (M=Be, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn) and (1‐x)MO·P 2 O 5 ‐xAl 2 O 3 ·3P 2 O 5 (M = Mg, Ca, Ba). Experimental V f of the glasses was ∼0 to 0.3. These results indicate that V f is not a universal constant (∼0.1) for all glasses as previously reported, but that V f depends on the glass backbone structure.
