A model is presented that describes the variation of the critical stress intensity factor, K k ., of glasses as a function of composition. It is based on a microheterogeneous structure that produces nonannealable stresses in the material. The effect of these internal stresses on the measured values of K IC is expressed as a function of the mechanical and thermal parameters of the material. Application to several borosilicate glasses is presented and discussed.
