The physicochemical properties of the surface of a soda‐lime glass were characterized with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A variety of chemical and physical treatments (e.g. grinding, fire polishing, and acid and base rinses) resulted in large changes in surface chemistry.
