The morphology of periodic gratings at the Ni‐Al 2 O 3 interface was investigated. The faceted gratings observed are related to the equilibrium shape of Al 2 O 3 particles embedded in an Ni matrix. The interfacial diffusional process at the Ni‐Al 2 O 3 interface was studied by observing the decay of sinusoidal gratings as a function of orientation. The orientation dependence of the interfacial diffusion observed for Ni‐Al 2 O 3 is similar to that of the surface diffusion observed for Ni‐Al 2 O 3 .
