Anomalous tensile stress maxima were observed in rectangular specimens of unidirectionally ion‐exchanged glasses. Two‐dimensional finite element analysis was performed to reveal all stress components in these specimens with or without hypothetical variations of specimen size and material properties. Results show that the end effects could be responsible, in part, for the anomalous maxima observed in some of the specimens. Not allof the observations could, however, be accounted for in this manner.
