Optical absorption spectra were determined for well characterized intermediate spinels, NiAl 2 O 4 and CuAl 2 O 4 , equilibrated over a range of temperatures. The absorption spectra were interpreted satisfactorily in terms of crystal field theory and were consistent with results of detailed X‐ray analyses. Covalent bonding caused some band shifts and changes in the ratio Dq (tetr. coord.)/ Dq (oct. coord.) and the net stabilization energies of the transition metal cation.
