Lowering of the freezing point of water in porous glass was studied by a DTA technique. The samples contained a spectrum of average pore sizes. The freezing‐point lowerings measured from melting and freezing curves correlated, as predicted by simple capillary theory, with the average pore size of the sample. This result is discussed in terms of capillary‐condensation theory and theories of frost damage in porous materials.
