Some samples of porous glass were polished on one side and their properties as ionic membranes determined. It is shown that polishing forms a layer on the surface of the glass which reduces porosity. The charge density of the resultant membrane is increased and its selective response to K + and Na + ions in the presence of Ca ++ ions is increased. Electron micrographs of the polished surface and charge density data both indicate reduction of the pore size in the polished surface layer as compared to the original glass. It is suggested that these results indicate that the polishing process is primarily one of viscous flow caused by frictional heating.
