New data for monticellite crystalline solutions confirm that monticellite (CaMgSiO 4 is unstable at atmospheric pressure. On the join forsterite‐monticellite, the estimated range of stable monticellite crystalline solutions is 89 to 93 mol% monticellite at 1200°C and 75 to 92 mol% at 1490°C. The range of forsterite crystalline solution is 93 to 100 mol% forsterite at 1200°C and 81 t0 100 mol% at 1490°C. These results can be applied to the proportions of phases present in impure periclase refractories at service temperatures.
