The reactivity in vacuum of some molten nickel‐base alloys with various refractories was investigated. Contact angles between alloy drops and refractory disks were measured from photographs. Sections taken through the contact region were examined microscopically. Supplemental information was obtained by other methods. The important influence of carbon on metal‐refractory reactions was demonstrated; reduction of the refractory by carbon was the predominant factor by which oxygen was introduced into the melt. Recommendations are made concerning the choice of refractory and melting conditions for the alloys.
