Sapphire single crystals alloyed with 0.5 cation % Ti and aged at 1500° C to form a precipitate showed considerable increase in hardness and fracture strength over unalloyed sapphire. It is suggested that propagation of a crack requires local plastic deformation and that precipitate particles interfere with local plastic deformation.
