The segregation of MgO solute at grain boundaries in Al 2 O 3 controls the grain‐growth kinetics during sintering. In the initial stages of sintering where grain growth can be neglected, the MgO solute causes a decreased sintering rate by reducing the surface energy and/or the diffusion coefficient of the rate‐determining species. During the later stages of sintering, the segregated solute decreases the grain‐growth rate which dominates the sintering kinetics.
