Experiments were made on the compaction of steel spheres in cylindrical containers. Shot was vibrated in the system resonance region. Uniform density was achieved by the use of a restraining device and the superimposition of a second vibratory mode normal to the axial mode. Equations were derived for the packing efficiency of spheres. The equations allow calculation of packing fractions of multicomponent systems in terms of diameter ratios only.
