Molybdates containing trivalent rare‐earth ions are of interest for optical maser studies. Large single crystals of CaMoO 4 were pulled by the Czochralski technique. The addition of Nb 5+ ions to the melt led to consistently high optical quality CaMoO 4 :Nd 3+ crystals. This improvement resulted in optical maser resonators with thresholds approaching the range required for continuous wave operation at room temperature.
