Annealing experiments on NaCl single crystals are reported, showing that the expected decrease in yield strength is significantly modified by stress history, impurities, and furnace atmosphere. Annealing in air can result in a higher yield stress than that obtained without annealing. The lower limit obtained for the critical resolved shear stress of NaCl single crystals is 35 g per mm 2 .
