Valence Changes of Iron and Manganese in Manganese Ferrite

The gain in weight of manganese ferrite was measured at several oxygen pressures and temperatures above 1200°C with a controlled atmosphere thermobalance. The phase boundaries were determined where necessary and the weight gain was measured within the one‐phase field. The lattice constant was also determined from high‐angle X‐ray reflections (2 θ × 160°) on specimens quenched in mercury from the same oxygen pressures and temperatures at which the weight gain was measured. The lattice constant was found to decrease with increasing oxidation. The results show that iron and/or manganese coexist in several valence states within the stability range of the single‐phase material.
