A series of alumina‐silica specimens ranging from pure alumina to pure silica was prepared. The specimens were then crushed and mixed with either sodium carbonate or a mixture of sodium carbonate and vanadium pentoxide. The mixtures were pressed into cylinders which were heated at temperatures between 800°C and either 1700° C or the melting point. Changes in dimensions were noted and the reaction products were studied by X‐ray diffraction. Some of the specimens showed large volume expansions associated with the formation of sodium alumi‐nate. Reaction products detected included al‐bite, nepheline, and the mineral jadeite.
