X‐ray diffractometer techniques for measuring triaxial and biaxial strain in ceramic bodies are described. The results of the techniques as applied to model ceramic systems using A1 2 O 3 and ThO 2 crystal phases compacted with various glasses in the system Na 2 O‐B 2 O3‐SiO 2 are presented. It is shown that internal stresses due to expansion coefficient mismatches occur in these systems and that their magnitudes often exceed the bulk strength of the body. Further applications of the techniques are discussed.
