This study covers the development of a new basic brick with outstanding resistance to load deformation, slagging, and spalling. This brick is made of 92% high‐purity periclase and 8% high‐purity alumina. During firing for a ceramically bonded brick or in service for a chemically bonded brick, the fine periclase and alumina react to form a spinel (MgO.Al 2 O 3 ) bond. As the magnesia content of the periclase is increased, the properties of this brick become more outstanding.
