The factors involved in the development of plasticity are discussed. The importance of the rigidity of the adsorbed water ms and the effect of various ions on this rigidity is shown by entropy calculations. All the monovalent ions with the exception of the smallest (Li + and F − ) indicate an increase in the disorder of the water structure that agrees with observations on plasticity.
