The crystalline phases which are present in fluoride opal glasses containing various combinations of divalent oxides have been identified. On the basis of these observations, the occurrence of various fluorides is discussed. The information deduced concerning the relative ease of precipitation of the various cations as fluorides is considered and explained in terms of the part played by such ions in the glass structure. It is shown that, other factors being equal, those ions which may be considered as taking part in the structural network are less liable to form a crystalline fluoride.
