The surface tensions of a series of lithium, sodium, and potassium borate melts were measured by a maximum pull‐on‐cylinder method. All the alkali oxides raised the surface tension. In the high‐alkali range the order Li + > Na + > K + was observed for surface tension and for the algebraic value of the temperature coefficient of surface tension. In the low‐alkali range (up to 15 mole %) the order of surface tension was K + > Na + > Li + and the temperature coefficients of surface tension, independent of the type or concentration of alkali ion, had approximately the same value as that of B 2 O 3 . This behavior was interpreted as a tendency toward immiscibility limited to surface phenomena. Correlation was observed between alkali content, volume expansivity, and temperature coefficient of surface tension.
