The possibility of accelerating the compacting 1 of glass at constant temperature by application of linear pressure has been investigated. The study was limited to borosilicate optical glass. Pressures up to 31 atmospheres and temperatures within the transformation region were used. Several methods of applying pressure were tried. No difference in the compacting rate, as compared with samples not exposed to pressure, and as determined by critical‐angle refractometry or interferometry, was discerned.
