Water‐film thicknesses in monodisperse kaolinite fractions were determined by direct measurements and compared with those in the gibbsite and quartz systems. The influence of Ca, Na, and H exchangeable ions on kaolinite films was investigated and the solid‐liquid interface energy was computed by means of heat of wetting. A mechanism of base exchange and a new concept of the plastic structure are offered.
