A bstract Attempts were made to correlate the physical properties of fire‐clay refractories with the phenomenon of low‐temperature spalling. A method of considerable promise was developed in which the relative flexural strength of fire‐clay refractories at 1500°F., in the notched and unnotched condition, indicated the resistance of these bodies to low‐temperature spalling. No purely mathematical relationship between the physical properties and low‐temperature spalling characteristics appeared to be valid.
