A bstract Brick installed in glass‐tank checkers, removed, cleaned, and returned to service at higher operating temperatures showed excessive bloating and shelling; checker‐brick from open‐hearth checkers were affected in a similar manner. Chemical analyses of the several samples indicated that pickup of excessive alkalies may be responsible. The alkalies apparently were derived from either the batch, the fuel, or the ground water occurring under the checker settings.
