A bstract Although laboratory experiments confirm the theory that wall tile might craze in an expanding cement, this does not seem to happen often at the wall. A large number of wall tile, exhibiting craze lines and considered to be typical for the backing cement effect, were refired and tested in the autoclave. All of them crazed during the test at 50 lb. per sq. in. vapor pressure in 2 hours, indicating that their crazing on the wall was due to the moisture expansion of the body.
